JD174 got airborne at 00.09 on the 14 July 1943 from Leeming.
Badly shot about by a night-fighter and, on return to base, the Halifax with its bomb-load intact was abandoned, crashing at 05.50 onto a hillside and exploding.
F/L Bain, who sustained a broken leg, was awarded an immediate DFC, details being Gazetted 26Jul43.
Again this plane is NOT one of the ones initially reported lost to this raid.
Sgnt John Irvin Labow was sadly KIA on the 31st March 1944 aboard Lancaster LL633
Sgnt Acorn was sadly KIA onn 4th Dec 1943 with 405 Sq and aboard Lancaster JB222
F/Sgnt Haugen was sadly KIA on the 18th Aug 1943 with 405 Sq, aboard Halifax HR817
F/O Philip Magson was sadly KIA on 24th Aug 1943 with 405 Sq, aboard Halifax HR918
