Ken Ratcliffe

Daphne Ratcliffe has written a short bio for us of Ken's life in the RAF.

Kenneth Ratcliffe 20-6-1923 to 8-3-2010

Ken volunteered for the RAF at 17 1/2 and was called up at 18.

After initial training etc, in 1943 he went to South Africa to 41 Air school in East London (taking 6 weeks in convoy to get there). He trained there as a navigator/ bomb aimer.

After returning to the UK he was posted to Lossiemouth Scotland, where he met the rest of his crew for the first time, flying Wellington Bombers.

Ken's crew:

Charles (Chuck) Warner - Pilot
Sid Love (RCAF) - Navigator
Arthur Adcock - WOp
John (Jock)(Higgy) Higgins - Mid-Upper Gunner
Edwin (Yorkie) Moore - Rear Gunner
John (Taffy) James - Flight Engineer
Ken Ratcliffe - Navigator/Bomb Aimer.

Edwin (Yorkie) Moore is the only surviving crew member. He lives still lives in Yorkshire. Massive amount of photo's of the crew on Edwin's page

After Lossiemouth they were posted to Riccall (Yorkshire) to convert to Halifax MK III Bombers.

They were posted to 102 Squadron late October 1944 and flew on missions to Sterkrade, Essen and Duisberg.

On a mission to Essen on Nov 29th they were forced to bring a 2000lb bomb back home but managed to land safely.

They were posted to 171 Squadron North Creake (Norfolk) in January 1945.

In all they flew about 40 missions over Germany.

The crew stayed together until the end of the war and kept in touch for the rest of their lives.
