Peenemunde Raid

Postby Neilw » Sun Sep 25, 2011 5:09 pm

On the 17/18 August 1943 Bomber Command dispatched 596 aircraft against the German Rocket Base at Peenemunde on the Baltic Coast. These comprised of 324 Lancasters, 218 Halifaxes and 54 Stirlings. For the first time there was a Master Bomber controlling the Operation, it also appears that this was the first time that the Luftwaffe used Schrage Musik.

102 sent 17 aircraft on this operation these included the crews of -

F/S W A Rooney F/S B R Moss F/S W R Lambert
Sgt J. A. Chappell F/O J W Ward
Sgt W Hughes F/L J L Causton
Sgt K G McAlpine Sgt A Kularane
Sgt S W Templar Sgt K Mountney
P/O J Bowman Sgt G S Roadley
Sgt P Sayer P/O T H Dargavel
W/C S. J. Marchbanks S.L J W H Marshall

Sadly 41 aircraft of Bomber Command did not return that night although none of these losses was from 102 Squadron.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this raid, anything recorded in Log books or via an informal routes, do they know of any Squadron Members who may still be alive who flew on this raid? I would be very grateful if they could pass on my request or any information.

Many Thanks

Neil

Ok Neil

I think you will find that sgt Kularane is actually Simon's dad Ananda Kularatne.. I think... but you need to check with him..

Only reason I think this is because I know Simon has mentioned his dad going on one raid to this place!
