Aircrew Logbooks

Postby jonshell » Sun Oct 23, 2011 7:27 pm

Hi everyone,

the following is some information regarding aircrew logbooks. I have two originals in my possession and some info from others via previous contacts. The two i own are for 1493595 Sgt E Moore (Flight Engineer). There are 8 ops in the log dating from 4/7/44 to 21/7/44. The log ends abruptly but i don't think moore was killed as he doesn't show on any CWGC pages. The other log is for 1583090 Sgt j E Smith (Navigator). There are 6 ops dating from 15/3/45 to 25/4/45 (I believe this was the last bomber command operation of the war). This log continues after the war and includes Liberator flights to the middle east etc. I also have the log information (copied) for 1603423 Sgt K Rogers (Flight Engineer). He flew 37 ops from 29/5/44 to 28/10/44. Plus log info for ??????? Sgt j W Hiorns (Air Gunner) with 33 ops from 6/7/44 to 21/12/44. I have some info too for ??????? Fg Off W J Petersen (Pilot) His ops are 19 from 28/1/45 to 25/4/45 (Final op again).

Feel free to ask for any or all the info i have as i am only too willing to share it. I would dearly love to know more about Sgt E Moore as he seems to be a bit of a mystery. I've asked through the association in the past but no one could shed any light on him. With his log are a piece of a blotter pad with some names and scribbles on plus a newspaper cutting from the Caen raid of 7/7/44. There is even an original of the letter by Eisenhower sent to all the forces personnel on D-day. The log for J E Smith came with his medal group, some photos and an original 102 Sqn blazer badge. i can provide photos or scans if anybody wants them.

..... listening out, Jon

Jon, I'll keep it really simple :)

Everything you've got please!
I understand thats a lot of work for you, so if you really don't mind sharing all this info you have.. I will make pages up for everyone you mentioned.
The best way is that you send me things by email though, and if possible you make each email about either one person, or one crew.

Off the top of my head I don't recognise anyone in the list.. but then I have entered about 2000 names into this thing in the past month so I'm not saying any of the people you have aren't already on the site some where.

If you drop me an email to chrisharperAT102ceylonsquadron.co.uk (removing the at of course), we can talk some more.

OHhh BTW. I saw your name on the list of members two months ago and for some reason I never called you.. ( I spent 4 weeks on BT's on line directory trying to get phone numbers.. lol) .. anyways.. sorry I didn't call.

Hi Jon, I had a quick look through the squadron losses and couldn't find Mr Moore either! He might have been injured on a raid and invalided out of service, or simply threw the towel in. I hope somebody does come up with the info. I look forward to seeing the log book entries as many overlap with my uncles missions. They are listed in 'Bob Leyland' in the memories section.
Great to have you aboard,
Bill.

Jon - I have had a quick look at the ORB but all I have found so far is the record of him leaving the squadron in July 1944 but unfortunately 102 is one of those Squadrons which does not say where - I will have a more thorough look, give me a few days

Hi Neil, sorry for the delay in responding ....work ....blah blah ....work etc.

Does the ORB say why he left? Was he posted or was there a more sinister reason (LMF for example). Does it give his first name by any chance?
