Flying Officer Herbert John Wroughton

Johnny was a Wop/AG from October 1942 to October 1943, he died on November 14th 2013. According to the London Gazette he was appointed Pilot Officer on 13th March 1943 and Flying Officer on 13th September 1943.

He was shot down on a raid on Kassel on the night of 22nd/23rd October 1943 in a Halifax piloted by Ft Lt E. S. (Ned) Kelly. After successfully parachuting when injured he was found by a crossing keeper and taken to hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered two bullet wounds. His story and that of other members of his crew are told on Pages 101-103 in *Its Suicide But Its Fun” by Chris Goss together with a photograph.

Details will also be published in the next newsletter

Our condolences to his daughter Mrs Elizabeth J Purser and her family.
