Hi,

I don't want to put all this on one person so asking for some help. You will have seen my request for people to write out crews to go onto the Crew List Page.. well I have one in particular that I need someone to do .. please

I need the name of the pilot checking for a start.. because on the 14/05/43 in the suicide book he is F/S A M Sargent and yet when was shot down ten days later, he is F/S A McA Sargent.. some one want to try and find out which is right for me please... and then type out the whole crew for me... (Neil, any chance you could send me the ORB?? )

The reason is I am in contact with Sergeant James Colin Smith's grandson Alan, and I am about to start on his page.

Many thanks guys..

Chris

Chris,
Chorley BC Losses 1943 23-24th May 1943
Halifax II JD112 DY-H Op Dortmund
F/S A McA Sargent pow
Sgt C R Webb pow
Sgt A Campbell +
F/O J R Bullock +
Sgt M Galloway pow
Sgt H D Newbery +
Sgt R M E Harrison pow

T/o 2258 pocklington. Shot down by nighfighter (Maj Rolf Leuchs II./NJG2) and crashed 0055 in the Oude Gouw polder Het Grootslag at Bovenkarspel (Noord Holland) on the western outskirts of Enkuizen. those who died lie in Bergen General Cemetery. All had ditched two (ten) nights earlier while returning from Bochum. Concerning F/S Sargent, the prisioner of war file shows two airmen with this surname, both being held at Kopernikus with consecutive prisioner of war numbers; the second named being a 35 Squadron Pilot.

Both dates in Chorley give the same crew spelt the same way, I think Goss just missed the "cA" out. The time period error is probably a drafting mistake.

I hope the back gets better soon.
Simon

Simon, thanks mate.. thats great.. will work on in tomorrow... BUT

now I have a question... IF, and i believe you.. it wasn't ten days before.. then does that mean that Goss's entry for Sgt V H hatchard going down is wrong too???

Chris,
I think you may have misunderstood. The sea rescue was 10 days before, it is in Chorleys book under the correct date. It is just that the paragraph I quoted states "two days" which is clearly wrong, it should say 10. So it looks like a typing error that was not spotted in the proof.

Apologies for the huge delay on this - ORB lists a F/S A. M. Sargent as pilot of JD112. I have yet to find any other entries to cross check it with but there is a F/S Sargeant (?) recorded as arriving on squadron April 43.
