P/O P.R. Dunsford - DFC

Postby ChrisInBlackpool » Sun May 13, 2012 12:25 am

Ok Guys... a mars bar to the first person to solve this... :)

The above is named on the back of Edwin Ted Moorings photo that we have a thread about on here.
The thing is.. and sorry for being so dense.. I've just figured out something...

The people on the back of the photo listed don't add up to the number of people in the photo, and PR Dunsford was NOT Ted Mooring's regualar Bomb Aimer, P/O C.J Lynwood was, the person listed underneath Dunsford name on the photo.
Link to this photo below.

I think... that this photo was taken when Dunford must have stood in for Lynwood, I just don't have the ORB to prove it..

HOWEVER... IF, Dunford was not part of Mooring's reg crew, which he wasn't, who was he with??
I have looked through about 30 orbs from the time and I can not see his name once... not once.. and yet in Feb 45 he is awarded a DFC?

I know how some of you guys love a mystery.. so can you solve this one??

Ohh if you want an insentive.. a gentleman by the name of Gordon just emailed me asking about the photo, Gordon Dunsford that is.. :)
For the memory of everyone who served with 102 Ceylon Squadron,
but mostly for the 1,027 in two World Wars who never came home.
Lest we never forget. http://www.102ceylonsquadron.co.uk

Hi Chris,
On page 184 of Chris Goss's book there is a Sgt Dunsford listed last (Bomb Aimer?) as uninjured in the crew of S/L JEH Marshall on the Essen mission 3rd April 1943 in Halifax JB867 DY-V. However, S/L Marshall's regular Bomb Aimer was P/O WEJ Murphy (who also flew with W/O AS Younger). Maybe P/O Dunsford was an Odd-Bod?

Additional information from the London Gazette 9th Feb 45 (3rd Supplement to LG 6th Feb 45):
RAFVR General Duties Branch, Confirmation and Promotion, Pilot Offs (prob) confmd in appts and to be Flg Offs (war subs): 8th January 1945 P R Dunsford (182410).
Additional information from the London Gazette 20th Feb 45 (5th Supplement to LG 16th Feb 45):
DFC awarded to Pilot Officer Philip Roberts Dunsford (182410).

Hope this helps ..... I don't think that it wins the Mars Bar outright so I'll just have a lick of it.

Cheers,
Dave.

He also flew with the Marshall crew 29/05 to Wuppertall and 11/06 to Dusseldorf. On the op on 03/04 the Rear Gunner of Marshalls crew was sadly killed by Flak.

As an aside - sorry to those who are waiting for info from the ORB, lifes been a little hectic and I've lost a few emails, somplease get in touch again -
