Warrent Officer Charles Rae Barr R.C.A.F.

R9530 DY-J piloted by W/O Charles Rae Barr was one of three No.102 Sqdn Halifaxes lost on this operation that took off from Topcliffe bound for Essen on the night of 16th June 1942.

The other two were W7652 DY-P piloted by Sgt. Harold Batchelder, and W7651 DY-M, piloted by W/O William R. Davies

Sgt David Macneil Smith - (R.C.A.F.) - A/G - Aged 22 - (C.W.G.C.)
Sgt John William Brown - F/E - Aged 24 - (C.W.G.C.)

Took off around 23.02 from Topcliffe.
Shot down by a night-fighter (Hptm Bensch, ERG.St./NJG2) and crashed 00.25 into the sea some 60 km W of Walcheren.
Three bodies were eventually washed ashore and taken for burial in Dutch cemeteries.

F/S Conter, Sgt Rocks and Sgt Smith have no known graves.

We have no idea why this crew only had six members.

With the exception of Sgt D.MacN Smith RCAF, this crew had survived an emergency landing on the 20th May 1942 aboard W1099.
